Maintaining Your Cat's Coat: Tips For You

Posted on

As a cat owner, you want to be sure that your cat is happy and healthy at all times. One of the ways you can accomplish both is to properly maintain their coat. There are many steps that you can and should take in proper coat maintenance in cats, no matter if they have short or long hair. Get to know some tips to help you out with this process. Then, you can get started implementing them in your cat care routine right away.

Brush Your Cat at Least Once a Week

One of the best ways to keep your cat's coat in great condition is to brush them at least once a week. For short-haired cats, once a week is generally enough unless they are in a particularly heavy shedding season (usually after winter), in which case you may want to up it to two or three times a week.

Longer-haired cats require more frequent brushing. So, you should plan on brushing them on a schedule of two to three times a week or more. Every day would be ideal. These cats have a tendency to develop tangles and mats in their fur. Once the fur is matted, it is very difficult to do anything but cut or shave them off, which can be tough to do in and of itself. As such, it is best to brush your long-haired cats as often as possible to avoid this situation.

Switch to a Sensitive Skin Cat Food Formula

If your cat has a rough coat or shows signs of dry skin and dandruff, you might want to consider switching them to a new cat food, one specifically designed for sensitive skin. These foods contain vitamins and nutrients that support skin health and can help to prevent these issues.

Have Them Groomed Every Month or Two

Your cat should get a professional pet grooming appointment every month or two to maintain the healthiest coat possible. Bathing a cat is a challenging if not impossible thing to do at home. Pet groomers are equipped and prepared to properly bathe your cat without getting injured in the process. This bath in and of itself will help your cat's coat in removing dead skin cells and loose fur.

The grooming process will also involve a thorough brushing after the bath to remove even more fur. They can also get fur trimmed if necessary and mats and tangles removed.

Now that you know some of the steps to take to best maintain your cat's coat, you can add these steps to your cat care routine right away.
